McDowell Park Nature Museum
The museum space in the 1980s facility was a disconnected assortment of home-made exhibits utilizing laminated text. The challenge was to improve the flow of traffic through the museum while creating a dynamic setting for large-scale exhibits.
A theme was developed revolving around the insect kingdom to appeal to an audience comprised largely of school-aged children, as well as tourists and residents. The design uses insects as a window into nature to educate visitors about the processes of the natural world. The theme reinforces the nature center’s key messages related to land preservation and the appreciation of the natural environment.
Giant insects hanging from the ceiling act as a stimulating vehicle to engage visitors the moment they enter. The pallet of bright, secondary colors was inspired by photography of nature and its inhabitants. Even the dramatic, theatrical lighting used in the redesign was inspired by nature: The lighting was hung at varying heights to invoke a swarm of lightning bugs.
