Camden Square
Camden Square was a total overhaul of a city block where several aging factory buildings were renovated to create a mixed-use design oriented development in a hip, funky, industrial district along the vintage trolley and light rail line in South End Charlotte. Shook Kelley was designer on the project which involved the renovation of and addition to a block of warehouses in this former industrial district.
For MECA Properties, one of the driving forces behind the successful redevelopment of the entire South End district, the objective was to reconnect the fabric of the district to create a design center for the building community with accompanying offices, restaurants and retail shops. For one building, an additional objective was to create two new facades to complement the warehouse-look and context of the neighborhood.
Shook Kelley’s role in the project was architectural and interior designer for 1930 Camden, and interior design consultant for the Nebel Building. The Nebel Building serves as the entrance to the Design Center with a two story skylight atrium surrounded by office and retail space. 1930 Camden is a two story 84,500 square foot renovation that anchors one-half of the design district where to-the-trade retail and restaurant spaces coexist with design and high-tech oriented office space.
Through the reuse of buildings, Shook Kelley reconnected the fabric of Historic South End by creating a design center for the community with office, restaurant and retail space.
