Independence High School
The new main gym and administration additions and renovations are the latest improvements to Independence High School designed by Shook Kelley. Beginning with a campus-wide needs assessment in 1999, Shook Kelley has designed numerous, different additions and renovations at this campus.
The first phase built was a two-story, 20 classroom building with science labs on the second floor and general classrooms on the ground floor. The second phase was renovations to the main building including HVAC, accessible toilets and technology upgrades. This phase also included the replacement of about 75% of the exterior walls of the main building due to failure of the masonry. The third phase was renovations to convert two vocational spaces (drafting and sewing) into a culinary arts lab with a fully equipped commercial kitchen and a restaurant/classroom. The fourth phase, which is awaiting construction funding, involves a new administration and main building entry, a new 1600-seat gymnasium, converting the existing gym into an auxiliary gym, and a complete renovation of the locker rooms and support spaces.
