The Vineyards At Nassau Valley
The Vineyards is a place that will be a sustainable, livable and meaningful community with a vibrancy and vitality that is unparalleled on the Delmarva Peninsula.
Today, densely settled towns and cities are still few and far between in the state of Delaware. Opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities and interact with wonderful natural settings still abound. However, Sussex County, Delaware has experienced an increase in population in ten years. Most of the growth has been in the eastern beach communities, thanks to the many baby boomers that have decided to retire to this beautiful place. As the population of the United States grows larger, no place is safe from the onslaught of development. No place is safe from change.
It can be said though, and perhaps rightly proven, that the growth of the human habitat is one that is as important as the preservation of that of the other species with which we share the earth. It is the manner in which this growth occurs and the manner in which the built environment takes place that is paramount.
Luckily, for Sussex County, its concerned citizens and elected and appointed leaders have been working hard to make ordinances designed to guide and shape the built environment for the better. Shook Kelley's master plan for The Vineyards, by virtue of what it will do for the built environment, will benefit the natural environment as well. By combining fresh attitudes towards appropriate densities and combinations of uses, through critical attention paid to the fabric of the landscape and patterns of settlement, and with a timelessness imbued in the architecture, The Vineyards will establish a benchmark for similar endeavors that will inevitably follow.
Properly planned, designed and executed, The Vineyards will one day pass into the realm of great places that exalt both the man-made and the natural features within themselves–places that will endure for future generations.
