Sonoma Bistro

Save

Pierre Bader, a local Charlotte restauranteur, came to Shook Kelley with the task of creating a new restaurant located on the ground floor of a newly renovated, 16 story building in the downtown area.

Sonoma Bistro

Two separate moods were created within the space: a passive, softer space for dining, and a more active space with a dynamic street presence for cocktails and appetizers. With wrap-around, outdoor patio seating for 60, Sonoma Bistro was situated on a highly trafficked street.

It's casualness is communicated through earthy, warm colors, hand-wrought materials, open space and sunlight.

The glass walls on the street corner were set back to bring the street into the restaurant. By placing most of the color and active wall planes at the back edge of the space, the interior design visually drew attention through the restaurant.

In the formal dining area, pockets of seating were created through the use of alcoves and corners, curtained zones and ceiling definitions that seemed to float in the night sky. The use of contrasting materials, such as the glass and metal storefront with the natural wood millwork of the bar-back, helped to balance urban austerity with comfortable elegance.
