Hy-Vee
Hy-Vee is a highly successful and well-regarded regional grocery store chain based in Des Moines, Iowa, with more than 235 stores throughout the Midwest. Among other things, the brand is recognized for its innovative approach and its willingness to continually challenge the expectations of the grocery industry.
Hy-Vee contacted Shook Kelley to study one store location in a promising market, with the intent of finding creative strategic solutions for that store, as well as a next generation of Hy-Vee stores. In-depth research of market conditions at the site, including competitive analysis and providing insights into the existing store experience, was combined with Shook Kelley’s ongoing analysis into food culture and food trends inside the retail environment.
Shook Kelley provided a series of reports and presentations to Hy-Vee to including presentations of first impressions, Discovery research, strategic insights and ultimately, a conceptual new store direction for the site. While the specific store concept was not constructed, the ongoing consultant relationship helped provoke innovations in the Hy-Vee organization around food service, prepared foods and the use of store design to promote and tell the story of the Hy-Vee brand.
