AIA Communities By Design: SDAT Program
The SDAT program is a community assistance program focusing on the principles of sustainability, bringing teams of volunteer professionals (such as architects, urban designers, landscape architects, planners, hydrologists, economists, attorneys, and others) to work with community decision-makers and stakeholders to help them develop a vision and framework for a sustainable future. Members from Shook Kelley were selected to participate in the Hilo, HI SDAT during May of 2009.
The focus of this SDAT was to help Hilo maintain its identity as representative of “genuine” Hawaii, while allowing it to thrive in a state that is reliant upon tourism and commercial development. Part of having a sustainable community, is being a healthy one. Hilo is very navigable Hilo is by foot, with many quarter and half mile radius-distances that can be walked in 30 minutes or less.
