Shook Kelley served as consulting retail designer for the Sonoma County Food and Wine Center and as urban design consultant for the recent winning submittal for this design competition. The winning submission involved a large and expert team of consultants in housing, parking, planning, landscape design, food, restaurant, development, sustainability, transportation and community development.

The project is a response to a competition to redevelop a piece of land in historic Railroad Square in Santa Rosa California, owned by the Sonoma Marin Transit Authority (SMART), to link to a new commuter rail line between Sonoma and San Francisco. The site development is designed around the principles of smart growth, sustainable strategies, agricultural conservation, cultural place-making, and dense urban housing befitting the local community and historical storyline.

With 250 new living units, 450 underground parking spaces, new street development, a public plaza, a historic water tower, a new location for the culinary Arts center of the Santa Rosa Junior College, health club, restaurant, retail and day care, the new Railroad Square team built a submission that aims to create a vibrant place in an empty parcel of land. The Sonoma County Food and Wine Center (the Sonoma Market), designed by Shook Kelley, is a local artisan market, farmer’s market, wine center, and showcase regional for batch-produced foods and wine. As a unique regional draw, the Sonoma Market is a centerpiece and point of reference for Sonoma County wine tours, agriculture, special events and gourmet tourism. And as a family friendly market hall, it is also an accessible, convenient and educational food venue for residents of the adjacent neighborhoods, Railroad Square and the city of Santa Rosa. As an experience the Sonoma Market offers places to eat and drink inside and out and a place to immerse oneself in the products and processes of the Sonoma County region.
