Kanawha
Shook Kelley prepared the master plan for this 380-acre mixed-use sustainable community along the Catawba River that is intended to be the first community of its kind—where development decisions will not only create and preserve a unique sense of place for its residents, but also accommodate the changing needs of future generations.
Much of the green building today consists of expensive prototype homes or commercial buildings in high-rent markets. Kanawha will combine the lifestyle benefits of new urbanism – a walkable, mixed-use community with business, residential, recreational, cultural and educational opportunities – all with an environmental sensibility. We believe Kanawha will represent a new category of development.
Ideally, sustainable development enhances – and does not impair – the ability of future generations to enjoy clean air, clean water and a healthy food supply. Kanawha will include residential, retail and commercial uses with abundant open space to protect habitat, wetlands and streams, and conservation buffers on the Catawba River.
