Darrow Pond

Save

Shook Kelley was hired by Vespera to develop a vision plan for a new active adult community – a project that will be a prime example of the movement of Placemaking through its planning, design and execution.

Typical subdivisions appeal to a customer base where price is usually the most important concern. Places appeal to customers at many levels. A typical subdivision layout for the property would most likely erase the many natural characteristics of the site, and not deliver any new ones of aesthetic value. Most of the major trees and forested areas would be eradicated. In its place would be a collection of unconnected houses uniformly perched upon the hillside. Beauty is not a term one would normally apply to subdivisions.

Darrow Pond will appeal to a broad spectrum of people who do indeed place a high value upon both natural beauty and significant architecture. As a result, the planning of Darrow Pond will, at every juncture, be focused upon creating a place that “fits” into the landscape as it exists, and that improves upon the natural world for the future.

Shook Kelley participated in public hearings/ presentations to The Town of East Lyme Zoning Commission, helping to get approval of the proposed zoning regulation amendment in order for the project to move forward towards the next phase of entitlement.
