Scaleybark
Along the City of Charlotte's Lynx Blue light rail line is a stop that is designated to become a new, special, mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood. Much attention was lavished upon the area surrounding the Scaleybark Station train stop in the process, including a massive rebuilding of South Boulevard. As a result, this area attracted the attention of no less than five national and regional developers.
Sensing that development within the area could quickly become uncoordinated, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission convinced the developers to retain Shook Kelley, under the aegis of the Planning Commission, to act as the area master planner/planning co-coordinator for the entire station area. All agreed, even though four of the five developers were clients of Shook Kelley, and Shook Kelley was the master planner at this site for two of the properties. Through a series of charrettes, Shook Kelley was successful in establishing a joint agenda among the developers, developing shared urban design standards, and in sorting out a number of infrastructure issues that impacted all involved.
